8th of August – World Cat Day

World Cat Day is an unofficial holiday celebrated around the world on 8 August. On Cat Day, people pay tribute to these animals for their merits and show them their respect and love. The purpose of the holiday is not only to honor the furry couch potatoes but also to pay attention to the problem of stray cats and cats.

History of the holiday
The International Animal Welfare Foundation started the holiday in 2002. In some countries, this holiday is celebrated on other days, for example, in the United States, Cat Day is celebrated on October 29, and in Japan - on February 22. Every three years on the second Sunday of May in Belgium, in the city of Ypres, a cat parade is held.

In Italy, November 17 is celebrated as the Day of the Black Cat. In the Middle Ages, black cats were exterminated by the Inquisition, since they were considered the devil's helpers. Now Italians are trying to make amends to them and remind everyone that cats are friends of people and are not to blame for anything.

Besides "aesthetic pleasure" cats also perform several useful functions for humans. They perfectly exterminate rodents, treat some diseases, and even prolong the life of their owner. American doctors have found that cat owners are 40% less likely to suffer from heart disease, and they also have fewer heart attacks and strokes. And British doctors have developed a whole "cat therapy", with the help of which they propose to treat several diseases, in particular - inflammation of the joints and gynecological diseases.
