17th of October – The Sweetest Day in the USA

Every year on the third Saturday in October, the United States celebrates Sweets Day.

This tradition began in Cleveland in 1921, when Herbert Birch Kingston, a philanthropist and confectionery worker, decided to help disadvantaged orphans, the poor, and all those in hard times.

Kingston gathered a small group of residents of the city, and with the help of friends, they organized the distribution of small gifts in order to somehow support the hungry, those about whom the government had forgotten a long time ago.

For the first Sweetest Day, movie star Ann Pennington gave 2,200 Cleveland newspaper delivery boys sweet gifts in gratitude for their hard work.

Another big movie star, Theda Bara, donated 10,000 boxes of chocolates to patients at Cleveland Hospital and everyone who came to see her movie at the local cinema.

Initially, Sweetest Day was celebrated mainly in the central and western regions of the United States - in the states of Illinois, Michigan, and Ohio. In recent years, the popularity of the holiday has grown significantly, and now the geography of the celebration covers other regions of the United States, in particular, the northeastern part of the country.

Ohio, home of Sweetest Day, has the sweetest products on this day. It is followed by California, Florida, Michigan, and Illinois in the top ten sales leaders.

This holiday serves as a great occasion (along with Valentine's Day) to express romantic feelings and friendships. On this day, it is customary to give chocolate or roses, as well as everything that is the personification of delicious - after all, it is assumed that love should be sweet, like milk chocolate!
