What to Do if You and Your Girlfriend Don’t Have the Same Sense of Humor

A similar sense of humor is something that many couples have in common. You could say that it is a great gift from fate.

But it happens that you and the girl you met on VeronikaLove may not have the same sense of humor. It may even seem that there is anything in your relationship except laughter and fun.

Don't despair and think that your romantic relationship is doomed to failure. There are several ways to cope with the fact that you and your girlfriend have different senses of humor.

Find common ground
Overcoming any misunderstanding should begin with finding common ground.

Think about what you and the girl find funny. It could be funny videos with kittens, good-natured jokes about modern realities, whatever.

Make a short list of common ground, and then think about how you can use them in everyday life.

But if there is no particular overlap in sense of humor, then try to meet the girl halfway. Figure out what makes her laugh, and then try to use it more often in communication. Such a manifestation of care, even if the things that make her laugh out loud seem unfunny to you, will help strengthen the relationship and show that you care about her mood.

Make fun of yourself
If you want to make your girlfriend laugh, but your sense of humor does not match, jokes about yourself will save the day. But you need to use them sometimes - if you overdo it, you can do yourself a disservice and seem not funny, but pathetic.

But still, if you made a mistake or did something strange, make fun of it. But remember that making fun of yourself is not the same as belittling or insulting yourself. Your funny remark should emphasize your ability to laugh at yourself and not take things too close to heart.

If after your joke the girl only smiles a little and does not laugh out loud, do not be upset. We think she will appreciate your willingness to bring a little fun into her life and defuse the situation.

Learn to be playful
Let your inner child free and be playful. For example, build a tent out of blankets for her arrival or invite her to go to the park to shoot each other with water pistols.

Do not think that this is silly childishness. Such moments fill the relationship with enthusiasm, and also help to laugh a lot, even if you and the girl like completely different jokes.

Do not make fun of her
In an effort to make a girl laugh, you can cross the line, and attempts to make the day more fun will end in failure or offense.

Do not make fun of her personal qualities and appearance, even if you think it is funny. Different things mean different things to different people, and your throwaway joke could very well be the cause of her insecurity or sadness.

The best thing you can do is talk to your girlfriend about what topics to avoid when it comes to humor. She might be okay with a joke about her funny dancing habit near the stove, but she might be offended and hate you if you make a snarky joke about her freckles or tattoos.

It's important to consider these things so that humor remains humor and doesn't become a reason for doubt in the relationship.

Try Sarcasm
In an attempt to achieve a comedic tone with your girlfriend, try adding a little sarcasm into your speech. It can be hard not to laugh at a snarky joke because its veiled meaning is hard to ignore.

This doesn't mean you should make snide remarks or become cynical. Just use sarcasm from time to time to defuse the situation or entertain your girlfriend.

Set boundaries
It often happens that we do not like the jokes of those around us. Perhaps the girl accidentally hits a sore spot when her humor becomes too critical, or some topics she raises seem inappropriate to you.

It is important to talk to her about the fact that not all humor is good. Explain to the girl that there are limits to everything, including jokes. Clearly indicate that you consider ridicule or teasing with the aim of making comments unacceptable in a relationship.

Change disappointment to laughter
Sometimes things may not go as planned. For example, you went on a picnic with a girl hoping to spend a wonderful day in nature, but suddenly it started to rain and “washed away” all your plans.

Try to replace disappointment with laughter to cheer up both yourself and the one you love. Make a joke about the situation so that it seems funny and positive, and not like it's ruining the day.

This will definitely cause a positive reaction and also defuse the situation. But if you make your dissatisfaction with the rain and the ruined picnic obvious, then there will be no talk of any mood or laughter. Why ruin the day if there is always an opportunity to make it better, and at the same time become a little closer to your girlfriend and have fun, instead of being angry and suffering?
