23rd of August – Flag Day of Ukraine

On September 18, 1991, the Presidium of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, by its resolution "On the Flag of Ukraine", granted the blue-yellow flag the status of the country's official symbols. On January 28, 1992, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted a resolution “On the approval of the National Flag by the State Flag of Ukraine”.

In Ukraine, the holiday was established in accordance with the decree of Leonid Kuchma "On the Day of the State Flag of Ukraine" dated August 23, 2004. In 2009, Viktor Yushchenko amended the decree, establishing an annual official flag-raising ceremony on 23 August throughout Ukraine.

Foreign guests are welcomed under the blue and yellow flag in Ukraine, military personnel takes the oath, Ukrainian embassies are working, it is posted at the UN.

Flag of Ukraine: a history of appearance
The first historical mention of the combination of yellow and blue colors dates back to 1256 - the day of the founding of Lviv. On the coat of arms of the city, a yellow lion is connected on a blue background. The Cossacks also had blue banners with gold ornaments.

The first attempt to form a rectangular flag of yellow and blue colors was made by the Main Russian Rada in Galicia. And already in 1848, on the initiative of the Rada, a yellow-blue flag was first raised at the Lviv City Hall.

The first official recognition of the blue-yellow flag as our national symbol took place on March 22, 1918 - the Central Rada adopted the Law, approving the combination of yellow and blue colors as the banner of the Ukrainian People's Republic.

Ukrainian flag: records
The largest flag of Ukraine had a size of 40 × 60 meters. He was even included in the Ukrainian Book of Records. And the largest painted national flag appeared in Kyiv in June 2014. Thousands of residents of the capital on the Obolonskaya embankment painted a part of the concrete slope.

Interesting facts about the Ukrainian flag:
1. The Ukrainian flag changed several colors before coming to the usual blue-yellow color - it was red, crimson, and red-blue. In 1918, the Central Rada, headed by Grushevsky, approved the current color scheme.

2. Chinese artist Mao Mao in 1992 asked the first President of Ukraine Leonid Kravchuk to change the arrangement of the colors on the flag. This combination, in her opinion, Mao, symbolized trouble for the state.

3. In 2016, Ukrainian climbers planted our flag on the top of the highest volcano in the world - Ojos del Salado in the Andes. Its height is 6872 meters.

4. Among the flags of the Slavic countries, only Ukrainian and Bosnian are not red.
