4th of October -World Animal Day

World Animal Day, celebrated around the world annually on October 4, was established at the International Congress of Supporters of the Movement for Nature, held in 1931 in Florence (Italy), and aims to draw the attention of mankind to the problems of the rest of the planet's inhabitants.

The date of October 4 was chosen because this day is known as the feast day of the Catholic Saint Francis of Assisi, who is considered the patron saint of animals.

Animal welfare societies of many countries of the world annually organize various mass events and events dedicated to the Day. In Russia, this date has been celebrated since 2000 at the initiative of the International Fund for the Protection of Animals.

According to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), every hour on Earth, three species of animals disappear, 70 species of flora and fauna of the planet disappear daily, and a quarter of all species of flora and fauna will cease to exist in the near future. Over the past quarter-century, the biological diversity of the Earth has declined by a third.

Therefore, today’s date is set in order to increase public awareness of the need to protect the environment, increase activity in the protection of animals.

Moreover, this applies to the protection of not only wild animals but also domestic ones, since there are more and more examples of ill-treatment in recent years. In many Western European countries, pets are considered to be part of the family and have the same rights as other members.

In recent years, World Animal Day events have been held in more than 60 countries around the world.
