31st of August – Blog Day

The idea to celebrate Blog Day on August 31 appeared in 2005 when active LiveJournal users saw the numbers 3108 in the word "Blog. Therefore, August 31 was set as the holiday date.

The initiators of the Day of the blog urge to devote it to acquaintance with comrades from different countries and with different interests. To do this, it is proposed to write short reviews on five different blogs, and on August 31, publish these entries with links to the author's pages. It is believed that it is best to write on this day about blogs that diverge from the sphere of the author's usual interests, his point of view and life position so that both the user and the visitors to his page will discover something new for themselves.

The bloggers took the idea with enthusiasm. When August 31 was declared a holiday for the first time, 30 thousand new pages appeared in the Google index at once. And in 2007, in connection with this date, the Best of Blogs competition for the best blogs began. It is open to publications in ten languages: English, Arabic, Spanish, Chinese, German, Dutch, Persian, Portuguese, French, and Russian.

Today the blogosphere is the fastest-growing part of the Internet, which has recently demonstrated an almost threefold increase in a year. There are 75 million blogs in the world; in Russia, according to Yandex, there are more than 2 million unique addresses. In the Russian-language part of LiveJournal, there are author pages, the audience of which amounts to tens and hundreds of thousands of readers a day. In fact, blogs are a social network.

However, do not confuse Blog Day and International Blogger's Day, which has been celebrated on June 14 since 2004. This holiday is considered to be a symbol of friendship between LiveJournal users from different countries. On June 14, every blogger can publish on his page a message about solidarity with other authors of Internet diaries.
