30th of September- International Translation Day

Every year on September 30, in many countries, a professional holiday of interpreters and translators is celebrated - International Translation Day.

In 2017, the UN General Assembly at its next meeting unanimously adopted Resolution (A / RES / 71/288), which recognized the role of professional translation in uniting peoples, in promoting peace, understanding, and development, and September 30 was declared International Translation Day.

The purpose of the new international date is to confirm that professional translation as a craft and art plays an important role in achieving the goals and adhering to the principles of the Charter of the United Nations, bringing peoples closer, promoting dialogue, mutual understanding, and cooperation, ensuring the development and strengthening of international peace and security.

It was no coincidence that the date for the holiday was chosen; on this day September 30, 420, Jerome of Stridonium, one of the four Latin Church fathers, writer, historian, and translator, died. He is considered the patron saint of translators.

Jerome Stridon was a man of powerful intellect and fiery temperament, traveled a lot and made a pilgrimage to the Holy Land in his youth. He later retired for four years to the Chalkidian desert, where he lived an ascetic hermit. Here he studied the Jewish and Chaldean languages, and his companions had, in his own words, "only scorpions and wild animals."

In 386, Jerome settled in Bethlehem. It was here that for many years he translated the Bible - the Old and New Testaments into Latin. Eleven centuries later, its version was proclaimed by the Council of Trent as the official Latin text of the Holy Scriptures (Vulgate). In addition, it is believed that Jerome was the creator of the Glagolitic.

Every year, events held as part of Translator's Day (congresses and conferences, corporate events and educational events, training courses, round tables, and seminars) are dedicated to a specific topic.
