26th of September – European Day of Languages

Every year, since 2001, on September 26, the European Day of Languages is celebrated with the aim of maintaining linguistic diversity, bilingualism of every European, the development of teaching and learning of various languages in the world. It was proclaimed by the Council of Europe with the support of the European Union during the European Year of Languages.

Indeed, now there are more and more people who are fluent in at least one foreign language. The phenomenon of knowledge of foreign languages has been studied for a long time. Why is it so difficult for some people to learn their native language, while others easily perceive several foreign languages at once? Is this the result of hard work or is there enough genetic predisposition?

The preservation and development of languages, including small ones, is declared as the official language policy of the European Union. The ways to achieve this are usually cited as learning more than one foreign language and continuing to learn languages into adulthood. The need to study several foreign languages is especially emphasized.

In total, there are 225 languages in Europe, but more than half of them are either already extinct or are on the verge of extinction as a result of gradual assimilation into the position of a linguistic minority (for example, Irish and other Celtic languages). On the other hand, the linguistic picture of Europe has significantly enriched since the second half of the 20th century, when, as a result of mass economic and political migration, practically in all European countries, especially in their capitals, the speech of many peoples of the world began to be heard.

All decisions made by the official bodies of the European Union (EU) are translated into all official languages, and EU citizens have the right to contact EU authorities and receive a response to their inquiries in any of the official languages. At high-level events, efforts are being made to translate the participants' statements into all official languages (as required).

Despite the declared equality of all languages of the Union, with the expansion of the borders of the EU, “European bilingualism” is increasingly observed, when in fact, in the work of the authorities (with the exception of official events), mainly English, French and, to a lesser extent, German is used - with any other languages are used depending on the situation.

The preservation and development of languages, including small ones, is declared as the official language policy of the European Union. The ways to achieve this are usually cited as learning more than one foreign language and continuing to learn languages into adulthood.
