4th of October – World Animal Day

World Animal Day (World Animal Day), or World Day for the Protection of Animals, celebrated around the world annually on October 4, was established at the International Congress of Supporters of the Nature Movement, held in 1931 in Florence (Italy), and is intended to draw the attention of humanity to problems of the rest of the inhabitants of the planet.

The date October 4 was chosen because this day is known as the Feast Day of St Francis of Assisi (1181/1182 - 1226), who is considered the patron saint of animals. Churches in several countries hold services to mark World Animal Day, either on October 4, or on a day close to that date.

Societies for protecting animals annually organize a variety of public events and events dedicated to the Day.

According to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), every hour three species of animals disappear on Earth, 70 species of flora and fauna of the planet disappear every day, and a quarter of all species of flora and fauna will cease to exist soon. Over the past quarter-century, the Earth's biological diversity has declined by a third.

Therefore, today's date has been set in order to raise public awareness of the need to protect the environment, to increase activity in protecting animals.

Moreover, this concerns the protection of not only wild animals but also domestic animals, since there are more and more examples of cruel treatment with them in recent years. In many Western European countries, pets are considered being part of the family and have the same rights as other family members.

Russia firmly holds the second place after the United States in the world in terms of the number of pets. Every third Russian family has “smaller brothers”.
