18th of June – Sustainable Gastronomy Day

This holiday is quite new. It was first held in 2017, and it was established by the UN. This decision was dictated by the fact that gastronomy is an important element of the cultural self-expression of any nation, associated with the natural and cultural diversity of the world. And also by the fact that all cultures and civilizations can contribute to sustainable development and play a crucial role in achieving it, as they contribute to sustainable development through a culture of food and gastronomy.

The goal of the Day is to focus the attention of the global community on the role that sustainable gastronomy can play in achieving sustainable development goals, including by accelerating agricultural development, improving food security, improving people's nutrition, ensuring sustainable food production and preserving biodiversity.

The decision was also based on the resolution “Transforming our world: the Sustainable Development Agenda until 2030,” in which the General Assembly approved in 2015 a comprehensive set of universal and transformation-oriented goals and objectives in the field of sustainable development, which is aimed at eradicating poverty, protecting the planet and ensuring a decent life.

Sustainable development includes such an important element as food production and consumption. This applies to all participants in the employment chain that are related to gastronomic tourism. This means that public and private institutions, manufacturers, tour operators should promote the consumption of sustainable food and build links with local suppliers.

On this Day, the United Nations invites all Member States, organizations of the United Nations system, other international and regional organizations, as well as representatives of civil society, including non-governmental organizations and individuals, to actively celebrate the Day of Sustainable Gastronomy in accordance with national priorities.
